In September 2021 we welcomed our first children to Spraoi, our Early Intervention ASD special class. Spraoi is attended by a maximum of six pupils aged between 3 to 5 years with a diagnosis of Autism. Children, depending on their age, can spend up to a maximum of 2 years in this class. Spraoi is a busy classroom full of fun and learning with class teacher, Ms.Maureen Dunne and Special Needs Assistants, Emily Doyle and Nicola Wickham.
One of the many programs implemented in Spraoi is TEACCH. This program focuses on the unique learning styles of children with Autism and the benefits of a structured learning environment to their learning. Spraoi provides an optimal learning environment with clearly defined areas within the classroom, such as; individual work stations, group work stations, play areas, class library and quiet area. This structured learning environment is strongly supported with the use of individual schedules, visual timetables, choice boards and visual supports in every area of our classroom. Using different sensory strategies and access to our newly established multi-sensory room enables children to stimulate their sensory awareness and help children to self regulate. Our sensory room consists of fibre optic lights, bubble tube, mirrors, projector, lava tiles, fidget board, beanbags, padded areas, texture tiles, mood music and fragrances to stimulate awareness.
