Policy on Absence
When a teacher is absent and substitute cover is not available, the class is divided and children are sent to designated rooms by the Principal and/or another teacher.
Substitute teachers are employed for certified leave, according to the regulations of the DES. Every effort is made to employ qualified teachers in substitute positions. Credentials of the teachers will be verified and/or a recommendation from a previous school of employment will be sought.
In the event of a course day absence the class teacher leaves work for the children to do during the day. The Board of Management of Scoil Naomh Áine has, in principle, agreed to employ a substitute teacher for these days paying a nominal fee which is conveyed to the teacher when he/she is being contacted. This was decided on the basis that all classes are disrupted when a class is split. The learning process of classes is not interrupted when a teacher is employed in these instances.
It is the policy of Scoil Naomh Áine that all teachers will prepare a folder of work which is relevant to their class group. This folder will be retained in the office and used in the event of an unexpected absence.
The prior approval of the Chairperson of the Board of Management must be granted for all uncertified absences, when it is possible to do so.
In line with the Education Welfare Act 2000, every absence of a child must be explained in writing, or by direct communication, to the school by a parent/guardian.
Written explanations are provided to the class teacher if the absence is of three days duration or more.
Children are not permitted to leave the school premises during school hours except with the consent of a parent/guardian and under the care of a trusted adult. This correlates with our "Child Protection Policy" also.
Section 21 of the Education Welfare Act 2000 places an obligation on the school to notify the Education Welfare Officer of absences exceeding 20 school days or more and Scoil Naomh Áine fulfils this requirement by submitting the information on-line.
